Everybody wants to save space and reduce clutter while maintaining the office equipment that a business needs. The Xerox WorkCentre XK40c provides a comprehensive space-saving solution. With ink-jet black and color printing, flatbed scanning, and black and color copying in one multipurpose unit, all of the functions that your business uses are available at the touch of a button.

The WorkCentre XK40c is an impressively substantial, sturdy, and professional-looking unit with easy-to-understand operations. We got a kick out of the enclosed user's guide, which was a Xerox copy with a brightly colored front and back cover--a great way to show off the product. The guide is heavily detailed to ensure a trouble-free setup, so we recommend taking time to review it. We found the directions to be clear and comprehensive.

Setting up the WorkCentre XK40c was easy. We dropped in the two print cartridges, connected the cables, and installed the software. In just a few minutes, we were fully armed for office operation. The WorkCentre XK40c copier worked well as a standalone, producing fine copies at a maximum 8 ppm for black and 4 ppm for color, although we found that it took more than a minute per page to get the color quality we sought.

We especially appreciated the reduction and enlargement features offering variations from a 25 percent reduction to 400 percent enlargement in 1 percent increments. However, there seemed to be no way to leap up to the higher enlargement sizes without going through the smaller sizes first. We made multiple copies, up to 50 at a time, on a variety of paper types and sizes including letter, legal, and envelopes. A range of adjustments allowed us to nuance the settings for best copy quality.

The WorkCentre XK40c is not designed as a high-volume copier/printer, but we think it can satisfy most of the basic needs in a small office. You'll still want to use a copy shop for large quantities or top quality. --Barbara Price
