Summary: Workhorse printer!
Comment: We've had our Laserjet 1000 for 5 years now, and it's still going strong! We print a fairly high volume, between my husband's work and the children's schoolwork, and it works flawlessly. I love this machine! It's easy to use, you can print envelopes and address labels with it, and the toner cartridge is easy to replace. I don't know if they make them like this anymore, so I hope this thing just keeps on chugging away!
I use it networked in through one of my PCs, and it functions beautifully through the "Share Printers" function on XP. I truly dread what will happen when XP no longer is available and I have to get another printer to deal with the dreaded Vista.

Summary: Cheesy, Lame, Printer
Comment: I have had this printer for one year and now it is dead. I changed cables while the printer was powered on in order to hook it up to my daughters computer temporarily. Power went out. Found a small print warning message to never remove printer cable while printer is on! There is also no on off switch. That means they were too cheap to put any transient suppression, emi, or soft start circuitry in the computer.
Before I blew the darn thing up, it didn't print very well. Many print jobs printed over and over. HP techs told me that that was a common problem and their lame solution was to cancel the print job manually.
Save up more money and buy a decent printer from someone besides HP!

Summary: Good Printer
Comment: I got a laserjet 1000 to replace an old LJ 4L that had served me well for nearly ten years. The 1000 is a competent replacement for people needing moderate laser printing capabilities. It is reliable, high quality, and cost efficient when you consider that you can print literally thousands and thousands of pages on one toner cartridge.
The only downside is that this thing is a bit less than perfect plug-and-play. It gets confused when I switch USB ports and sometimes I have to reboot and install the software again when I change it from port to port. Overall this is excusable because most people probably just plug it in one place and leave it, but if you have multiple un-networked computers, this thing can get a little confused. But if you just dont play with it and let it sit there like a faithful pet it will serve you well.

Summary: Prints well, missing functionality
Comment: The print quality and speed are great for the price.
However, there are no buttons on the printer. If you run out of paper while it is printing, the light just blinks. The only way to coninue after adding paper is to print something else. ...or turn it off, then on again.
I'd give it a 5 in print quality and speed and a 0 for the lack of controls.

Summary: A great printer (when it works!)
Comment: The HP1000 is an extremely cost effective laser printer (mine cost $99.95). Quality an speed are good enough for an individual user. However, the printer has USB interface problems that HP has not been able to resolve. In my case, it is necessary to unplug, then reconnect the USB cable every time the Windows 2000 is rebooted. Once the printer is online, it performs with the usual HP quality.
