Summary: Great printer for larger format printing
Comment: Pro's:
1. Absolutely breathtaking quality. I have printed on Ilford high quality glossy photo paper as well as Epson Velvet Fine Art and High Gloss photo papers. All were 13 X 19. All images were absolutely fabulous with a remarkable dynamic range.
2. Easy setup and install.
3. Straight forward installation of printer/paper profiles.

Con's:
1. A bit tricky at times with large paper feed from the back.
2. It's not pigment ink (but only higher-end printers are)
3. A bit expensive to replace the ink, but given the lower price than similar Canon or HP printers of this quality, it would take a lot of prints to make up any cost difference.

The bottom line is that I would absolutely buy this printer again because of the quality. The "Con's" mentioned above do not detract from my enjoyment of this printer.

I had looked at comparable HP and Canon printers. I also must confess that I have owned Espon printers before and never been disappointed. I cannot tell you that it is better than other printers of similar quality. I just can't tell a difference enough to switch from a good thing.

Summary: Pictures as good as a custom lab can produce
Comment: The best photo printer I have owned. Hard to see dots with an 8x loupe. Looks as good as a lab print!

Summary: Replaced Canon iP8500
Comment: I was having problems with dark prints. The actual fix was upgrading from an old Spyder calibrator to the Huey Pro. In the process, I bought the Epson R1800 to replace my Canon iP8500 (many hundreds of prints on Canon paper).
After experience with several hundred Epson prints, I am very pleased with the R1800. The color match with my calibrated monitor is right on. I use Epson paper. I am proud to share prints with friends, they are as good as or better than any prints from multiple commercial sources. I am more confident that the prints will still be good years from now.
The Canon ip8500 is a very good printer. The Canon printer is faster, but the Epson R1800 is still quite fast. I was not confident about the prints lasting- I have seen fading in prints on a bullitin board in one year. Some of the Canon colors are a little 'over the top', especially in the red family. The Epson colors are more correct to me.
Key- Don't waste time and money making photographic prints of this quality without a good monitor calibrator- Huey Pro, Spyder2, etc.
Bottom line- Epson R1800 excellent, Canon iP8500 very good.

Summary: Tricky
Comment: The printer setup was easy, but I am still working on the color calibration. Initial prints have not been close to the appearance on the monitor. One of the included software items was a demostration of a calibration setup. That would probably solve the calibration problems, but it costs around $380.
