Summary: Check for Firmware Update
Comment: Brother has released a firmware update which improves the reliability of the MFC-820CW's wireless networking. It's easy to get by visiting Brother.com, then clicking on Software Download at the top of their homepage and following the prompts. So... it seems that its only weakness has been addressed. Brother seems to have good support for their products, which is a rare thing these days. After considering similar units from HP and Lexmark, I can easily say that I recommend this Brother.

Summary: MFC-820cw wireless mlti-function center
Comment: I have been very pleased with most of the functions that this system provides. However, the wireless function, which was the main reason I purchased this unit, doesn't work. I hope someone can help solve this problem.

Summary: Brother MFC-820CW
Comment: After having been a loyal HP customer for many years I switched brands because the MFC-820CW met my wireless needs at a bargain price for my home office. This unit does print slower than my previous HP's but this point is insignificant in comparison to it's overall operation. The black and color print quality are good and the ink cartridges seem to last longer versus HP. My experience with Brother customer service has been good and the representatives have been patient and accomodating. If you're looking for a good wireless multi-function device then I recommend that you check out the MFC-820CW.

Summary: Wireless is the way to go...but maybe not this wireless
Comment: Generally good experiences setting the printer up with the exception of getting the WLAN to connect to the router. The instructions are a little hazy and I had to put the printer right next to the wireless antenna to get the connection to setup properly. I was then able to move the printer to it's current location across the room. Very convenient for placing the device where you wish, near a phone line of course for the FAX. The software install was very easy(W2K) and I had no problem connecting to the printer the first time. It took several trys at setting up the print head and I had to do multiple test prints to get the results indicated for the test page in the manual. Once set up each portion of the device works well and has for the last month so I cannot say much about longevity. Only critical things I have to say about the printer are the WLAN connection always drops off when the printer is out of use for more than a day and there is a tendancy to jam pages that are not printed full width. Printing a column down the left side of the paper inevitably results in a jam within the output side of the tray. The copier portion has some quriks in the way it feeds pages in the document feeder that require close observation when trying to copy a small stack of documents. The 'over /under' document feeder takes some getting used to as it is not intuitive. I have not used the photo print or card reader features so I cannot comment on them. All in all the device meets my limited printing, faxing and copying needs. For a home device this is very good. It has a small footprint and is very quiet. I just wish I didn't have to turn it off and back on to recover my WLAN connection every time I fire it up. Maybe with a cable it would be ready when I am?

Summary: Excellent Value
Comment: The Brother MFC-820cw is an excellent value and does a great job of producing fast and high quality printing for text as well as graphics and photos. It even has a distinctive ring tone for incoming faxes and an auto on feature to receive faxes if the printer has not been turned on. The automatic document feeder works great and is really convenient. The size of the printer is perfect and yet it has so many features for the size. The only negative comment is the wireless function, even though it works with no problems it is extremely slow, its best to use the USB cable connection. Overall it is a great printer.
