Summary: Fantastic little printer
Comment: This is a great little printer. I am a professional student who prints quite a bit in the way of slides, notes, and the like. This is a very smart printer that puts out high-quality results very quickly. Set-up is a breeze.

Summary: Brother HL-2040 Excellent low cost printer!!
Comment: I have lusted for a laser for years, but was always put off by the cost of the toner and drums. Once I discovered the terrific prices Amazon has for the consumables, I didn't hesitate to buy this printer!! I got it for $45 with free shipping, and it works great!! I have been printing on in for 6 months on the starter toner cartridge, and it shows no sign of quitting yet. I have just purchased a replacement standard cartridge for when it does go (lowest price on Amazon, with free shipping!!) I put it on a small print server so that I can still use my color printer, and I am thrilled!! It works great!! You will not be unhappy with this printer!

Summary: Great little printer at a great little price
Comment: I rarely review products, but I decided to chime in on this one. It seems everyone either loves it or hates it. I fall in the former category.

Set up was a breeze. I have printed about a hundred pages of documents, and I have had none--none--of the problems other reviwers detailed. My pages didn't even curl.

As for longevity, we'll see. But at this price, if it lasts six months I'll be happy.

Summary: Great prints - BUT no room in tray to catch paper!
Comment: I've had my Bro HL-2040 for about 1 year. I've never had any paper feeding, jamming or printing problems. It does a great job of printing. BUT... It's meant to catch 100 pages in the catchment tray, but it doesn't. The depth of the tray where the paper lands once printed, combined with how much the paper curls from the heat of the printer, means that you have to stand by the printer if you're printing any more then 30 sheets of paper at a time - or the paper catchment tray jams up and your pages get thrown all over the floor, and jumbled out of order. This is very frustrating for me because i like to be able to "print and forget". Most of my printing jobs are 50, 100, or 150 pages at a time - and it is REALLY annoying having to stand next to the printer and collect the paper by hand as it comes out of the printer because there is no room for it to pile up in the tray. If you're printing 100 pages it means you need to stand by the printer for 2 minutes catching the paper - instead of being able to continue work on your PC. I've tried everything to fix this problem - including customizing the shape of the tray to give it more "depth" but it doesn't work. It's a great printer, but this problem is driving me mad, to the point where i'm looking for a new laser printer. Brother: give this printer another 3-4 cm of tray depth and this is a 5/5 star printer. As it stands i rate it only 1/5 stars, because catching paper as it prints is a frustrating waste of time!

Summary: For $39, can't beat it.
Comment: I got mine for $39 at Office Depot on Black Friday. "Upgraded" from an old HP Laserjet 4 and this is MUCH faster, although a lot more noisy. Print quality is nice, but a little lighter than the HP4 (maybe I need to adjust settings or something). Overall, VERY happy with it for the price.
