Summary: For the price, you can't beat it!!!
Comment: This printer is the best printer you can get for this price. If you print a lot of documents and do not need color, this is the way to go. I've had this for almost one year, printed at least 1000 sheets and have not had one problem with it. A great buy. Definitely worth it.

Summary: Wore out six of these fast.
Comment: I purchased a half dozen of these printers for my business. I have had them for about a year. Within that time four of them quit picking up paper from the tray. They would not print at all. I tried to swap trays, cartridges, drums, paper, anything else I could replace as a consumer. None of that worked. I threw them in the trash. Today I am having more issues with one of the two remaining 2040's. I will probably trash it also. There is some kind of design flaw with this model. I have a business full of other printers, all Brother models (except for 1 HP). The other Brother printers have performed well, with some of them over four years old.
DO NOT BUY THE 2040 model. It is junk.

Summary: Good printer for a good price!
Comment: After my inkjet printer this laser printer saved me from the ink cost. The print quality is awsome. I don't have curling paper problem. The installation was so easy and I did not have any problems with Windows Vista. My wireless network recognized it right away. I recommend this printer if you are looking for basic printings.

Summary: Excellent for the price once you learn what paper works
Comment: Paper in this printer is likely to curl. It's still an economical workhorse. I wore out its older brother, an HL1440, after nearly 8 years of heavy use; if I get half that time on this one, I'll be happy.
I bought this in January and what I've learned is that the paper is critical to getting good results with this printer.
I experimented with Northern Cascade laster, Office Max generic laser, and Hammermill Copy Plus paper. They're all in the 5-7 USD/ream range, and of them, Copy Plus performs GREAT. It doesn't curl, doesn't get staticky, and handles duplex pages perfectly.
I don't get paid by these paper companies, so this is just a personal endorsement, but if you're having frightful curling pages, try the Hammermill paper. It works great.

Summary: Effortless Setup-- Even Works Wireless-- The BEST !!
Comment: LOVE this printer! It was so easy to setup. I don't have the paper curling problem that some people have, maybe because I'm using the paper catcher flap.
Can't believe this printer works wireless!!!! Last year, we purchased a HP 6980 "Wireless" printer and never got it to work wireless. One HP rep told me I couldn't mix and match PCs. Another Rep wanted me to purchase a new wireless router. We even hardcoded the IP address into TCP/IP settings AND still, the printer wouldn't print wireless. Finally I hardwired everything using a USB cable. The problems didn't stop there. Finally the printer died after 10 months and costs 3x more than my HL-2040.
I'm using a USB cable on my HL-2040 and have it plugged into a hub. Two computers share a wireless router--desktop PC, laptop docked and undocked. Even though this printer doesn't sell as a Network or Wireless printer, you have these capabilities. Referenced in User Manual under Options.
- Go to "Control Panel" if using Windows XP
- Click "Printer and Faxes" and right mouse click the printer driver
- Scroll down to "Share." Then select "Share this Printer."
- Create an "Add Printer" from "Control Panel" on the other machine and select the network printer.
Other HL-2040 PROS
- Printer is FAR faster than my old HP printer that claimed it printed 30ppm.
- LOVE the compact design. All of the other laser printers are these HUGE boxes.
- Love the envelope feature--it allows you to print envelopes of ALL sizes!
- When cancel a print job, it really cancels, unlike other printers that keep printing--and then it forces you to go through a cumbersome cancellation process
- Couldn't believe the price of this printer!!! A GREAT value for the money.
CONS
- Drum replacement after 12,000 copies. Realistically, that would take me about 7 years or longer.
WISH I had this printer sooner.
